Jennifer's Story
I think it was the nesting instinct to the extreme. I was about 8 months pregnant and was getting the nursery ready when the pain struck. I had been bending and cleaning and moving bits of furniture around the room. Ouch…it felt like I’d been kicked in the groin area. I found it difficult to do any more that day. I lay on the couch waiting for my husband to return from work.
The next day the pain was still there and also around my bottom on one side. I had to kind of shuffle to move around. I went to the GP who told me it was my pubic bone separating early and gave me a referral to a physio who dealt with women’s health. Luckily she saw me straight away and fitted me with an elastic belt around my pelvis.
My physio was great. She explained exactly what was going on and told me to rest (no more cleaning sprees!!) avoid certain moves and told me if it got worse I may need crutches. I really took her advice to heart. Through the physio I also met a woman who’d been through Pelvic Instability. She suggested I avoid going up and down the stairs in my house by keeping essential items on me downstairs during the day. When I started doing that I found the pain reduced a lot.
I managed without crutches and ended up having a beautiful baby boy during a normal birth. The physio had suggested taking it easy after the birth and having a follow-up with her. She gave me great exercises to do to strengthen the muscles in my stomach and pelvic floor. My husband was really supportive, and my mum came to help a lot in the early weeks. Within a few weeks I had barely any pain. By the time my son was about three months I felt completely better.
